Future of Homeopathy in India

Prof ( Dr ) Kanjaksha Ghosh MBBS( Hons ), MD ( Med ), MNAMS ( Path ) , MRCPI, MRCP ( UK ) ,   FRCPath( Lond ) ,DNB ( Haematology ),FAMS ,FACP ( USA ), FNASc. Director, National Institute of Immunohaematology (ICMR) 13 th Fl KEM Hospital, Parel, Mumbai -400012. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You   may rightfully ask “Why should a person who has no official degree in homeopathy should speak about future of homeopathy in India”.   My humble answer to this question will be that due to providence of luck , good fortune and my official position as the Director of one of the leading Institutes of Indian Council of Medical Research.   I have a ring side view of epidemics, degenerative and malignant disorders spreading in this country and how   available medical system is not able to control it.   I am also a witness to rising resentment of patients due to lack of empathy and astronomical co

The Real Homeopath

Sometimes it is easy to get lost in our “role” as health care providers and miss the bigger task at hand. There is a model I talk with all of my Homeopath friends that I want to share with all of you that helps define who we are as homeopaths.      Every science is based on a primary assumption. The primary assumption in homeopathy is there is a vital force that is non-material; spiritual. If we recognize this as the foundation for our healing art then a spiritual model becomes necessary for a greater understanding of our part as the homeopath.       Another assumption is that there is a creative energy animating and bringing all things into existence. This creator we have historically given the name God. So if God is creating all things then I (homeopath) and my client (suffering client) are an extension of God’s creation. In essence there is really no separation other than our ego identification of self (Hi, I’m Anant. I’m a homeopath. You must be the patient). I personally do

Proper Case Taking

One of the most basic and simple habits a homeopath needs to develop is proper case recording. This is an essential tool and behavior necessary for good case management and being able to share your cases. Getting this procedure to become a habit will make all of your cases better and your ability to help your client will improve. Every case begins before the client even arrives. There is an energy that builds as the clients comes to the appointment. It can even start days before. This is something that the client will experience. They will bring this with them as they walk through the door. This is when the case begins for the homeopath. Often this initial meeting will be the most important part of the case. Pay close attention and as the case gets written include any remarks or gestures made during this time. I have my clients fill out a simple information form while they sit before me. This allows me to observe them and gather some vital information about them. This is simple

Tips for successful homeopathy practice

At our live class last weekend we were discussing the future of Homeopathy. It became clear that in order for homeopathy to grow as a profession we needed more homeopaths in practice. One of the students asked the question, “Why aren’t more students in practice after studying homeopathy?” The initial answer was that because there is not an established profession that is recognized by insurance then most people are not being funneled into homeopathic treatment. This is true. When people are sick they go to the doctor and insurance, (which is now mandatory in America), will pay for some portion of their visit. After paying the money for insurance, (which is a sizeable amount of their income), the person can not afford to pay out of pocket for homeopathic care. So homeopathy is not built into our system and homeopaths are not being referred to by the allopathic Doctors. It will be up to us to create our own market. Ask most people on the street if they know about homeopathy and mos

Future of Homeopathy

Homeopathy is at a crossroads also. The future looks bright, but I have some deep concerns also. It seems there is a growing divide between those who want to see homeopathy legitimatized by standards and regulation and those who recognize the individual uniqueness of the homeopath, client and remedy. This I do not think can be standardized. The group that wants to see homeopathy become mainstream medicine strives for a standard model of education as well as competency. This effectively lowers the standard of homeopathy to the lowest common denominator. In this model, every school must teach a standard minimum curriculum and testing. This is the same model that we have seen in the education of children in America. Much emphasis is put on testing with the individual who excels, being ignored. I think we have an educational vacuum in America as we are losing our brightest individuals to a standardized process. Read this very well written article. It is the same for homeopathy as with

Homoeopathy Education

Today we will discuss about homeopathy education. Education is a system for indoctrination. A system where one size fits-all. Where standards usually fall to the lowest common denominator which is the student that usually is the least capable. Then there is the problem of organization of the educational system and the regulation involved. In the education model you are told what to study for and then show proficiency by testing. Education needs evaluation. For evaluation to be fair then all students need to pass the same test. Eventually there is no room for individuality. This is definitely not encouraged. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. This works if there is a body of water and fish in it. And he has a fishing pole. But really there is an art in fishing. How to hold the pole and flick the wrist. When to set the hook and reel the fish in. If this were taught in a didactic, written manual, it would take a lot of pract

Is Homeopathy Scientific

Samuel Hahnemann gave us the  Organon of Medicine  in the early 1800’s. This is the bible for understanding homeopathy. We have a system of medicine in our modern age that claims to be scientific. Double blind studies are performed and protocol is written for drug evaluation. This is done by the same company wanting to sell the drug. Results can be skewed and ignored making a drug seem far more efficacious than it really is. Once marketed and sold at very little cost of materials the drug companies make billions of dollars. They claim that this is all scientific and that homeopathy is quackery. There is a different reality when it comes to understanding homeopathy. It is truly scientific and stands up to what true science is about.  Websters New World Dictionary   defines  Science  as, 1) originally, state or fact of knowing; knowledge, often as opposed to intuition, belief etc. 2) Systematized knowledge derived from observation, study, and experimentation carried on in order to de

Erectile Dysfunction

Now a days in 21st century if you watch television you have all become aware of the big problem of erectile dysfunction. Nearly every hour of television programming is riddled with advertisements for Viagra or Cialis. Erectile dysfunction is quite a popular subject; at least from the drug companies perspective. This is a billion dollar industry catering to erectile dysfunction. Drug therapy does not heal the problem and forces the body to have an erection. But homeopathy offers real healing. Erectile dysfunction or commonly known as impotence is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection. If a person is to heal from impotence the cause must be addressed. The most common causes are emotional in nature and only seldom have real physical causes. Emotional causes are; Anger towards a partner Anxiety Depression Discord or boredom with a partner Fear of pregnancy, dependency on another person,. or losing control Feelings of detachment from sexual activities or one’s

Lack of Concentration

Homeopathy has small remedies that can help us to concentrate better. During exam periods, we spend a large amount of time in front of our notes. We need a high level of concentration in order to understand, summarize concepts and memorize information. Sometimes, the time spent studying is prolonged and the student becomes physically and intellectually tired. We also need to concentrate at work or in periods of stress. Homeopathy can provide us with remedies that can help us to overcome overwork situations or chronic physical and intellectual fatigue. Not only that, homeopathy also has remedies to overcome the fear and anxiety that the student feels when the time of action is approaching. Homeopathy helps us in the physical, intellectual and emotional fields. Some homeopathic remedies that are used to increase concentration and performance and avoid nerves and anxiety are as follows: Kali phos & Acid Phos both can help us through exam periods or when we have diffic

Hering's Law-A Discussion

We know what is called "Hering's Law". But I doubt if anybody in this field knows where it came from. Where it originated from. You might say it is a law of nature, it originates from nature, but first: where does it come from in terms of having been discovered and having been described?  Hering's law - the four principles: 1 The disease progresses from outside in, and when it cures, it cures from inside out. 2 Cure will be from above downwards; 3 Cure will go from the most important, to less important organs; 4 Cure is in the reverse order of appearance of symptoms.  How does psychosomatic disease fit in hering's law? If disease progresses from outside in and is cured from inside out and if it is a law, how can we explain psychosomatic disease within that law? A law is a law. It is not contradictory. A law means that it does not change. If you have the right circumstances, the outcome will always be predictable. A law is for everyone, everybody who will obser

Constitutions-A Discussion

One subject that gets asked about a lot is constitutional types. I find that there is a great assumption in modern homeopathy to classify certain types of individuals into “constitutional types”. Several authors have written extensively about this and painted many pictures about what Sulphur or Lycopodium or Natrum Muriaticaum “constitutional types” look like. I find this very dangerous in homepathy. Every case before us stands on it’s own unique set of symptoms. No two cases are the same even if the same remedy is given. To create a box or group to file certain attributes of a remedy together and then fit a person to the box is not homeopathy. Learning any system that does this is very dangerous and leads to poor homeopathic prescribing. I was studying from  Kent’s Lesser Writings  and he said it best; “Why should we attempt to classify constitutions as an aid in prescribing? Every individual is a constitution, and no two sick persons can be classified as of the same class to

Frustration & Homeopathy

Image
One of the challenges of homeopathy is understanding your client and translating common language into the language of our repertory. The most common words people use to describe their situations are frustration and stress. It is our job to figure out what that means for them and find the remedy. Websters New World Dictionary defines frustration as a state of being frustrated. Frustrate is to disappoint or deceive, trick. To cause to have no effect, bring to nothing, counteract, nullify, To prevent from achieving an objective. Foil, battle or defeat. To prevent the gratification of certain impulses or desires. Obviously being frustrated is about having an expectation and not achieving it. Or being in a situation that we seemingly have no power over and feel stuck. I think most people in the western world have some level of this in regards to their work or family. It is endemic that we all suffer from some level of disappointment. This is why this subject comes up so very often wit
