Irritable Bowel Syndrome......IBS

INTRODUCTION-
✔Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a functional bowel disorder of the lower gastrointestinal tract i.e. large intestine (colon) in absence of demonstrable organic pathology. The symptoms of IBS may include abdominal pain, cramping, distention, discomfort, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, and alteration of bowel habits and various symptoms of defecation
✔There are three subcategories of IBS, according to the principal
• Pain associated with diarrhea
• Pain associated with constipation
• Pain and diarrhea alternating with constipation.
✔Each patient’s symptoms are unique.

DIAGNOSIS –
✔At least 3 months continuous or recurrent symptoms of abdominal pain associated with one of the following:
• Relief by defecation
• Change in stool consistency
• Change in stool frequency
✔And two of the following:
• Altered stool frequency (> 3 times per day or < 3 times per week)
• Altered stool form
• Altered stool passage ( straining, urgency, incomplete evacuation)
• Passage of mucus
• Abdominal bloating
MANAGEMENT –
✔Foods that make IBS worse: Here are some foods that may cause symptoms:
• Fatty foods like French fries
• Milk products like cheese or ice cream
• Chocolate
• Alcohol
• Caffeine (found in coffee and some sodas)
• Carbonated drinks like soda
Foods that make IBS better:
✔Fiber reduces IBS symptoms - especially constipation because it makes stool soft, bulky, and easier to pass. Fiber is found in bran, bread, cereal, beans, fruit, and vegetables.
Add foods with fiber to diet a little at a time to let the body get used to them. Too much fiber all at once might cause gas, which can trigger symptoms in a person with IBS.
✔How much one eats matters too. Large meals can cause cramping and diarrhea in people with IBS. If this happens to you, try eating four or five small meals a day. Or, have your usual three meals, but eat less at each meal.
✔Stress relief- Learning to reduce stress may reduce the frequency and severity of IBS symptoms. Techniques that may be helpful include:
• Relaxation techniques such as meditation
• Physical activities such as exercise or tai chi
• Regular exercise such as swimming, walking or running.
• Counseling
✔Exercise- Many patients find that exercise helps with IBS. At least 30 minutes of strenuous exercise 5 times a week is recommended.
