Pregnancy Management
Here are some do's and don'ts to be followed during pregnancies.
Consult a doctor if you have missed your periods for proper investigation.
Regular Antenatal follow up in very important
Maintain a healthy, nutritious diet with high protein, high carbohydrate and low fat & sweets.
Avoid large meals and eat small meals frequently. Drink plenty of water.
Do not self medicate it could harm your baby, and stop all drugs that are not essential. Avoid taking any medication in the 1st 3 months, This could harm your baby .
ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING ANY MEDICATION.
Reschedule daily tasks to take out more time for resting and sleep. Avoid straining at work.
Keep away from mental stress.
Alcohol and Smoking
Avoid consuming alcohol much before trying to have a family. Never take more than 4 units of alcohol a week, in any case.
Smoking, Air pollution are dangerous for your baby's health.
Avoid inhalation or skin contact with paints, insecticides or chemical household cleaners
Sexual intercourse
Most couples are able to have sexual intercourse until near the time of birth, consult your doctor before doing so. Avoid sex if there is a history of miscarriage of any leakage of fluid. In late pregnancy, orgasms may set off contractions, but will never induce labour.
Vaccination
Get vaccinated for german measles & mumps before pregnancy if not vaccinated .
Avoid taking any X-ray.
Mental Health
Pregnancy demands emotional adjustment from fathers also, so it is important to involve them also.
Do some light yoga and meditation with consultation of an expert.
Listen some light music.
Read some spiritual books like Bhagavad Gita,Srimad Bhagavatam,Ramayan etc.
Prepare in advance how and where you will have the baby. Home birth or 'natural' birth are not advised for the first baby or if there are any problems.
Minor health problems can be tackled easily.
Abdomen pain.
Use warm heating pad.
Regular recommended exercise will tone your abdominal muscles.
Backache
Focus on proper diet & exercise for weight gain
Avoid pain killers
Use heating pad for pain relief
Avoid wearing high heels
Don't stand for long periods
Don't stretch to reach high places
Sit straight with legs elevated
Sleep on a firm mattress
Be careful on lifting heavy loads, especially kids.
Breast Discomfort
Wear a proper sized bra which gives proper support Use nursing pads if your breasts leak Use breast cream to massage and prepare nipples to feed the baby.
Breathlessness
Sleep on your side, not back
Maintain weight as per recommended schedule
Constipation
Avoid using laxatives
Take plenty of dietary fibre, fresh fruit, vegetable, whole grain cereals, dried fruit & breads.
Contractions
Change positions if they cause discomfort
Bladder infection
Consult your doctor
Drink several glasses of juice & water daily to prevent infection
Dizziness & Faintness
Slow down when you stand up or get out of bed
If in a crowd get away & get fresh air
Oedema or swelling of legs.
Monitor your weight gain
Avoid standing for a long time
When sitting keep legs elevated
Wear proper shoe.
Exercise
A growing body can throw your off balance so be careful while walking of coming out of the bathroom. Avoid wearing high heels.Consult your doctor before your start any exercise. Some normal exercise may have to be modified.Don't get overheated. Avoid exercising in hot & humid weather .
Fatigue
Get proper sleep & rest.
Eat a nutritious diet
Heartburn
Avoid heavy, spicy oily meals
Stick to high fibre diet
Exercise daily
Don't lie down immediately after a meal
Piles.
Take a high fibre diet
Drink lots of fluid
Don't strain at stool
Use a warm Sitz bath or apply ice pack if constipation persists
Exercise to strengthen pelvic muscles
Leg cramps & Pain
Hot water packs or soak legs in hot water
If pain persists consult your doctor
Morning Sickness:-
Common in the first 3 months but usually better after that
Eat frequent light meals
Avoid large meals
High protein, carbohydrate diet, low on fat & sweets Plenty of fruits & vegetables.
Avoid Antacids
Drink plenty of water.
Mouth & gum discomfort
See your dentist early in pregnancy
Brush teeth & clean tongue twice a day use dental floss
Vitamin C & calcium supplement maybe helpful
Nasal congestion or Nose bleed
Use steam inhalation at night
Avoid nasal drops
Numbness
Avoid lying on your hands
Soak hand in warm water or use warm pads
Skin changes
Use sunscreen on face to prevent pigmentation or wear a hat when out in the sun.
Lubricate dry skin around abdomen with a moisturising cream
Stretch marks usually disappear after the birth
Taste changes
Iron supplements may leave a bad taste in your mouth.
Use a mild mouth wash
Urination Problems.
Leaning forward while urinating helps to empty your bladder
completely
Use a sanitary napkin for involuntary escape of urine when
laughing, coughing
Vaginal Disorders
A red or brown discharge signals to call your doctor immediately Itching & soreness may indicate infection which requires urgent treatment.
Varicose Veins
Wear elastic stockings
Exercise regularly
Don't stand for long periods
Raise your legs when sitting
Lie on your side in bed
Put a pillow under your feet.
