New Covid Symptoms

01/7 How long do you have immunity against COVID-19 after recovery?

There’s a lot your COVID-19 symptoms could tell about your health. From the severity of your infection, your risk of long COVID-19 and the type of treatment you may require, it’s crucial every patient keeps a track of his or her symptoms during the infection phase.

Now, newer studies conducted have also pointed to an interesting link- the one between COVID symptoms and immunity patients may gain after recovery.

02/7Who has the highest risk of COVID reinfection?

While some people may catch COVID-19 more than once, experts believe that the level of antibodies you have, and your innate immunity determines your risk of reinfection. Compromised immunity also means that people with certain comorbidities are more likely to fall sick again.

New research conducted by the University of Wisconsin, also asserts that the trajectory and pattern of symptoms can also tell how much a person is at a risk for reinfection.

03/7 What did the study find?

The study, which hasn't been peer-reviewed yet, analyzed blood samples from 113 patients recovered from COVID-19 over a five-week window, which were then compared from blood samples drawn after three months.

The findings of the study also prove what the previous researches have proved- men, and people with severe COVID sickness are more likely to have richer longer-lasting antibodies. Asymptomatic, and milder patients may see antibody count waning away sooner than usual.

While researches add that more credible studies need to be done to conclude the findings, these are the 4 broad signs a person has longer-lasting immunity and a lower risk of COVID reinfection in comparison to others.

04/7 Having fever for more than a week

Usually, a low-grade fever (ranging around 99-101 degrees Fahrenheit) is associated with COVID-19 and said to taper off after 4-5 days of infection. A fever which lasts for longer is a cause of worry.

While fever is also the body's natural response to inflammation, body temperature which persists for longer could also mean that the body is working overtime to produce more antibodies. Systemic inflammatory responses, such as fever are important to mount a good immune response, and could also be a reason why milder COVID cases mount fewer antibodies.

05/7 Suffering from appetite loss

Appetite loss, or experiencing displeasure during eating is common with viral ailments. In cases of COVID-19 infection, appetite loss and skewed eating habits are associated with severe COVID-19. It could also be brought on when a person experiences symptoms like loss of smell and taste (normal foods don't appeal to the tastebuds), throat infection, nausea and chronic fatigue.

If doctors are to be believed, extreme appetite loss is also a sneaky sign that your body is undergoing a major change and working to generate a high systemic inflammatory response, which helps in the production of rich antibodies.

While it may be a good indicator of your body fighting back and developing immunity, it shouldn't be taken lightly. Long-term appetite loss and eating problems could disturb metabolism, lead to weight loss, drain energy and fatigue, a feared consequence.

06/7 Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea, a feared consequence of severe COVID can strike patients in many cases. It can often also be accompanied by other symptoms like gut infection, vomiting, bad taste. It is usually considered to be a sign that the virus has impaired the gastrointestinal system and is common in hospitalized patients. However, it could also mean that it works to 'enhance or empower' the body's natural antibody response by revving up immunity cells present along gut linings.

07/7 Stomach and abdominal cramps

While abdominal and stomach pain are also a common sign of gastrointestinal complications associated with COVID-19, researchers found that the people who noted down abdominal pain as one of their evident symptoms throughout the course of infection had more antibodies and longer-lasting immunity than the ones who didn't. However, more research is needed to conclude the correlation between the same.
